Will Miley Cyrus' 'Vanity Fair' photo scandal affect her career?
What happened
Miley Cyrus, a/k/a/ Hannah Montana, issued an apology for appearing semi-naked in photos that will be in the next issue of Vanity Fair. “I took part in a photo shoot that was supposed to be ‘artistic’ and now, seeing the photographs and reading the story, I feel so embarrassed,’ Miss Cyrus said. “I never intended for any of this to happen and I apologize to my fans who I care so deeply about.” (The Press Association)
What the commentators said
“Candid Internet photos of Miley pulling down her T-shirt to show off a green lace bra last week, said Elizabeth Snead in a Los Angeles Times blog. “Semi-topless professional photos on the web this week.” What’s going on here? “Somebody needs to pull in the reins of this talented little gal, before here career stampedes off into the sunset. We really don’t need another Lindsay or Britney.”
This must be a lot of fun for Disney, said Brook Barnes in The New York Times. “Keeping a teenage entertainment franchise on track in an age when stars are monitored around the clock by bloggers and paparazzi is extremely difficult”—“executives are constantly battling to keep minor slipups from growing into full-blown controversies.” And nowadays, “media outlets—in particular the rabid celebrity-focused tabloids—have been pushing to capture new angles of the ubiquitous Ms. Cyrus.”
That isn’t necessarily a bad thing, said the blog Adotas. Although the behavior of the “clean-cut popette” has been “reportedly horrifying parents and fans around the country,” it’s also “seen her online profile skyrocket.” Google Trends reports that “Vanity Fair is the second-most popular search term, miley cyrus vanity fair comes in fourth and Hannah Montana vanity fair trails in fifth place. Three weeks ago, she wasn’t even in the top 100.”
